UEFA Grants Approval for LaLiga, Serie A to Play Overseas
These include a Spanish LaLiga fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona, as well as an Italian Serie A encounter between Milan and Como.
The football authority revealed in an official statement that its Executive Committee has, on an exceptional basis, agreed to these requests despite initial reservations.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin emphasized the importance of hosting all league games on their native grounds, warning that "anything else would disenfranchise loyal match-going fans and potentially introduce distortive elements in competitions."
He further expressed regret over permitting the two fixtures to proceed abroad but underscored that this is a one-time decision and should not be interpreted as a new norm.
UEFA explained that the approval was necessary because existing FIFA regulations lack clarity to prevent such relocations. Consequently, LaLiga and Serie A were authorized to hold these one-off matches outside Europe.
The Villarreal versus Barcelona game is scheduled to take place in Miami, United States, most likely in December.
Meanwhile, the Milan against Como match will be hosted in Perth, Australia, in February.
