Inter Miami’s Jordi Alba Set to Step Away at Conclusion of MLS Season

(MENAFN) Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has confirmed he will retire at the end of the current Major League Soccer season, closing out a distinguished professional career that has lasted close to two decades.

Although the 36-year-old, formerly of Barcelona and the Spanish national team, is contracted with Inter Miami through December 2027, he announced he will step away from the sport after this season concludes.

"The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life," Alba declared in an Instagram video.

"I've decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, peace, and happiness."

Alba’s journey saw him initially released by Barcelona as a teenager before returning to the club in 2012 following a successful tenure at Valencia. During his time with Barcelona, he contributed to six La Liga titles and the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League victory. On the international stage, Alba earned 93 caps for Spain and was a key player in their 2012 European Championship triumph.

"Jordi has been an exceptional addition to Inter Miami and one of the standout players in Major League Soccer over the past two seasons," Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas stated.

"His experience, consistency and attacking contribution have been very important to the club's success. Beyond the goals and assists, he has been a great asset within the team and an exemplary professional."

Among those paying tribute was Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi, Alba’s former Barcelona teammate. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner shared on social media: "Thanks to you, Jordi. I'm going to miss you so much," adding humorously, "Who's going to give me the assists now?"

Brazilian forward Neymar, who also shared Barcelona’s locker room with Alba, sent his regards, writing, "It was an honor to be a part of your career."
