Spanish King Felipe VI to travel to China next month

(MENAFN) Spanish King Felipe VI is set to make a state visit to China next month, accepting an invitation from President Xi Jinping. The trip, scheduled for November 10–13, will be the first visit by a Spanish monarch to China in nearly two decades and King Felipe’s first official journey to the country since ascending the throne in 2014.

“This is the first state visit to China by King Felipe VI since he ascended to the throne, and also the first visit by a Spanish king to China in 18 years, which holds great significance,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, highlighting the symbolic importance of the trip.

She emphasized Spain’s role as a key European Union member and a strategic partner for China, noting that 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership. “China is willing to work with Spain, taking King Felipe VI's visit to China as an opportunity, to consolidate traditional friendship, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen multilateral coordination, and promote the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership to achieve more results,” Mao added, also pointing to recent high-level exchanges between the two nations.

Economic ties are a cornerstone of the relationship, with China serving as Spain’s largest trading partner outside the EU. Bilateral trade has surged to $48.6 billion in recent years. Earlier this year, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with China’s Vice President Han Zheng in Madrid to stress the importance of open markets, international cooperation, and avoiding a global trade war. During his April visit to China, Sanchez also called for collaborative responses to pressing global challenges such as climate change and sustainable financing guided by international law and UN principles.
