Europe's Security Framework in Peril, Spain Warns
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares revealed he held telephone discussions with Ukraine's Andrii Sybiha, voicing hopes that 2026 might bring an end to hostilities for Ukraine's population.
Writing on X, the social media platform owned by a US company, Albares declared: "I have reiterated my condemnation of the recent attacks against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities. It is unacceptable that Ukrainians have to live Christmas under the bombs."
Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian strikes last week claimed three lives and knocked out electrical service across multiple regions.
Albares confirmed he pledged Spain's backing to Sybiha during peace talks aimed at securing an equitable and enduring resolution to the conflict.
"Europe must remain united and firm because the future European security framework is at stake," he stated.
The minister emphasized: "Ukraine must have solid security guarantees. Any decision about its future, especially regarding its territories, can only be made by the Ukrainian people."
His statement followed weekend talks in Florida between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who met Sunday to address the continuing hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.
After their discussion, Trump informed journalists he had addressed Ukraine's reconstruction plans with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting Moscow will help, "including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."
