Train Collision in Spain Leaves Dozens Dead

(MENAFN) Authorities confirmed on Monday that at least 39 individuals lost their lives and 152 others were wounded after two high-speed trains crashed near the town of Adamuz in Spain’s southern Cordoba province.

The disaster took place around 7:40 pm local time (1840 GMT) when a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed close to Adamuz and veered onto a neighboring track. This led to a second train, heading south from Madrid to Huelva, also derailing.

Regional officials stated that two carriages of the Alvia train plunged down a four-meter slope, making rescue operations more difficult, a newspaper reported.

Spain’s Interior Ministry announced that five of the injured remain in critical condition, while 24 others — including four minors — sustained serious injuries. More than 120 passengers suffered mild to moderate wounds.

Emergency teams mobilized extensive resources at the crash site, deploying mobile intensive care units, ambulances, logistics vehicles, and establishing an advanced medical post at an Adif railway facility to carry out triage and stabilize victims before hospital transfers.

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) dispatched around 40 personnel and 15 vehicles to support the rescue mission.

Juan Manuel Moreno, the Andalusian regional president, visited the location and described the tragedy as “a very hard day for Andalusia.” He added that authorities would release more precise figures once identification procedures were finalized.
