Spain Accuses Musk of Undermining Democracy After Attack on PM Sanchez
Musk labeled Sanchez a “fascist totalitarian” and a “traitor to the Spanish people” on his social media platform X, reacting to the Spanish leader’s announcement of new regulations targeting illegal content online, as stated by reports.
Speaking to the press, Justice Minister Felix Bolanos said the comments highlight the wider risks posed when powerful technology figures involve themselves directly in political matters.
“For many years, we have seen billionaires using their wealth to promote political agendas that weaken rights and damage social cohesion,” Bolanos said.
“Now they’ve gone a step further. This tech caste, these predators of everyone, are now directly involved in politics. They enter the public debate and threaten our respect, our coexistence, our rights and our democracy.”
Musk’s posts followed Sanchez’s remarks that Spain intends to tighten control over illicit content on social networks. The proposed measures include holding company executives criminally responsible for illegal material, limiting access for users under 16, and criminalizing the manipulation of algorithms to spread disinformation.
Bolanos, who also holds the role of minister of the presidency, described the issue as a clash between “billionaires who threaten us” and “progressive, courageous politicians like Pedro Sanchez who stand up to them and defend what belongs to everyone.”
The dispute has also provoked reactions from Spain’s far-right. Vox leader Santiago Abascal shared Musk’s posts on X, calling Sanchez “a corrupt criminal,” according to reports.
