Spain Denounces EU Commission’s Participation in US Peace Initiative
The comments were delivered during a public event in Barcelona, one day after Trump gathered delegates from more than 20 nations for the first meeting of the initiative. The discussions centered on plans for rebuilding the Gaza Strip and broader efforts aimed at regional stabilization.
Although the European Union chose not to formally align itself with the initiative, it dispatched Mediterranean Commissioner Dubravka Suica to participate in the segment of the meeting focused specifically on Gaza.
"It pained me to see a European Union commissioner who shouldn't have been there," said Albares.
Despite acknowledging Trump's "effort," the Spanish foreign minister maintained that "there are other ways" to achieve peace in the Middle East.
He reiterated that the EU remains committed to a two-state framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, on that basis, “cannot participate” in any body that excludes the Palestinian National Authority.
Albares further explained that Spain opted not to accept the invitation to attend because Palestinian representatives were not included, adding that the US-proposed peace plan "raises serious doubts about its compatibility with international law."
