Spain’s Sanchez Calls for Consistent Application of International Law

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday urged world leaders to apply international law uniformly, warning that selective responses to global conflicts undermine the credibility of the international system.

Speaking before Spain’s lower house of parliament, Sanchez criticized what he described as inconsistencies in how different conflicts are addressed. He argued that condemning certain actions in one context while ignoring similar situations elsewhere weakens global norms.

“What we cannot do is condemn the invasion of Ukraine … and applaud Iran’s attacks,” he said, emphasizing the need for a coherent stance across international disputes. He added: “We cannot demand respect for Greenland’s territorial integrity and remain silent when territorial integrity is violated in Gaza or Lebanon.”

His remarks highlighted concerns about perceived double standards in foreign policy, stressing that maintaining the integrity of the international order depends on consistent principles rather than selective enforcement.

Sanchez also directed criticism toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that actions in Lebanon risk replicating the destruction seen in Gaza.

He further described the broader regional consequences of ongoing conflicts, arguing that they have contributed to instability and weakened respect for international law. According to his remarks, such developments include escalating tensions across the Middle East, influencing conflicts in multiple countries, and leaving areas such as Gaza facing prolonged devastation and humanitarian hardship.

Sanchez concluded by stressing that global stability depends on consistent adherence to legal and ethical standards, warning that failure to apply them evenly risks eroding trust in international institutions and exacerbating geopolitical divisions.
