Spanish PM Makes Appearance at Pro-Palestinian Festival

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made a high-profile appearance at Barcelona's Primavera Sound music festival Saturday, lending his presence to an event that has evolved in recent years into one of Europe's most visible cultural platforms for Palestinian solidarity and opposition to Israel's campaign in Gaza.

The centerpiece of Sanchez's visit was the headline set by British band Gorillaz, which was preceded by a speech from Palestinian activist Arab Barghouti — son of imprisoned Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouti — who drew an outpouring of "Free Palestine" chants from the assembled crowd after thanking Barcelona and its residents for their support of Palestinians.

Following the event, Sanchez shared footage of the speech on Instagram, writing: "Thank you for raising your voice."

The festival grounds were adorned with a large illuminated "No War" sign, while organizers wove messages of peace and solidarity throughout the evening's programming. Primavera Sound has steadily deepened its engagement with Palestinian causes in recent editions. Last year, the festival unveiled Unsilence Gaza — a 15-meter tunnel designed to immerse visitors in the sounds of bombardment in Gaza — as a statement piece on the ongoing conflict.

Sanchez was accompanied at the festival by his wife, Begona Gomez, and Catalan regional President Salvador Illa. He also met backstage with artists and organizers, among them Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn.

In a post-event social media statement, Sanchez hailed Primavera Sound as "much more than music," crediting its organizers for their dedication to "peace, solidarity and a culture that brings us together."

The visit drew sharp rebukes from opposition figures in Madrid, who questioned the prime minister's judgment in attending a music festival on the same day Pope Leo XIV arrived in the Spanish capital — though Sanchez had formally received the pontiff earlier that morning.

Spain has carved out a notably assertive position among European nations in its response to the Gaza conflict, with Sanchez repeatedly calling for intensified international pressure on Israel and stronger institutional backing for Palestinian rights.
